Abu Musa
United Arab Emirates
Abu Musa is a modest island in the eastern Persian Gulf, near the Strait of Hormuz, whose sovereignty has been disputed between Iran and the United Arab Emirates since Iran occupied it in 1971 — with the UAE claiming it as part of Sharjah emirate. Its position between shipping lanes makes it one of the most strategically significant points in the Gulf. The island has two hills known locally as Jabal al-Hadid and Jabal al-Da'ali, and iron oxide deposits that were commercially mined for decades before the occupation.
