Aire-sur-la-Lys
Pas-de-Calais · France
A fortified town on the River Lys in northern France's Pas-de-Calais, Aire-sur-la-Lys has a photogenic centre with cafés and restaurants along the waterfront and a concentration of listed historic monuments. The town passed through the County of Flanders, the County of Artois, and Burgundian and Spanish Netherlands before being permanently attached to France by the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, a layered history that shaped its architectural character.
