Akre

This Kurdish mountain town in northern Iraq known for its Newroz celebrations, Akre has a compact centre with cafés and restaurants and sits within reach of water. The town is officially claimed by Nineveh Governorate but has been administered by the Kurdistan Region since 1991, and counts among the oldest districts in Iraq. Its Grand Mosque dates to the early Islamic period, built during the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab around 21 AH.
