Alba Iulia holds a layered history that few Romanian towns can match: a Roman legionary camp, the capital of the Principality of Transylvania from 1570 to 1711, and the city where the union of Transylvania with Romania was proclaimed on 1 December 1918, with King Ferdinand I and Queen Marie later crowned here in 1922.
