Founded in 1533 on the site of a pre-existing Chanka and Inca settlement, Andahuaylas sits in the Chumbao river valley in Peru's Apurímac region, with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants alongside the water. Known in Quechua as Antawaylla ("copper meadow") and nicknamed the "prairie of colored clouds," it serves as the main commercial and transport hub of Apurímac, with an airport connecting it to Lima.
