Andkhoy

Afghanistan

This town in northwestern Afghanistan on the southern edge of the Karakum Desert, beside the Andkhoy River and within sight of the surrounding terrain. Andkhoy has an ancient history in the Jowzjan region — it served as the capital of Faryab until the Safavid period, was largely abandoned after Shah Abbas relocated much of its population, and was later resettled under Nader Shah. A rail station now connects the town to neighboring Turkmenistan for cross-border trade.
