Arcen
Netherlands
This pocket-sized village on the river Maas in Dutch Limburg, Arcen draws visitors to its historic castle and the nationally known gardens on its grounds, as well as to the Hertog Jan brewery and the 'De IJsvogel' distillery, housed in a historic water mill and producing jenever, bitters, and liqueurs. The Maasduinen National Park lies close by, and the village sits near the only preserved fortress built to protect the Fossa Eugeniana, a canal constructed between 1625 and 1629 to link the Rhine and Maas rivers.
