A town in eastern Afghanistan's Hindu Kush mountains, Asadabad sits at the confluence of the Pech and Kunar rivers, surrounded by ridgelines running along both sides of a valley. The provincial capital of Kunar, it was historically known as Chighansarai — a name recorded by the Mughal emperor Babur, who noted it as a settlement on the edge of Kafiristan. The town has bazaars, parks, hotels, restaurants, and is home to Sayed Jamaluddin Afghani University.
