Asenovgrad

Known informally as "Little Jerusalem" for its concentration of churches, monasteries, and chapels — said to be the highest per capita in Bulgaria — Asenovgrad is a town in central southern Bulgaria at the foot of the Rhodope Mountains. Above the town stand the ruins of Asen's Fortress, strengthened under the 13th-century tsar Ivan Asen II, after whom the town was renamed in 1934. The town is also locally known for its Mavrud and Pamid red wines, and for its unusually large number of wedding-dress ateliers.
