Sitting at the mouth of the Guadiana River on the Portuguese border, Ayamonte is a walkable Andalusian town with a café-filled centre, waterfront views, and a photogenic old quarter that draws steady visitor attention. Its origins reach back to Phoenician settlement, and from the 16th century it grew into one of the province's most significant commercial centres. Today the town is connected to Portugal's Algarve by the International Guadiana Bridge, and the beaches of Isla Canela add a coastal draw alongside the historic core.
