This UNESCO World Heritage spa town on the Franconian Saale river in Bavaria's Lower Franconia region, Bad Kissingen holds the oldest spa garden in Europe, dating to 1738, and the largest ensemble of historic spa buildings on the continent — built up from the 18th century as a rival to Karlsbad and Baden-Baden. The town sits at the southeastern edge of the Rhön Mountains and is one of eleven "Great Spa Towns of Europe" recognised by UNESCO in 2021, with a walkable centre well supplied with cafés and restaurants.
