Baia Mare
Romania
A walkable city in northwestern Romania with a café-filled centre, several historic churches, and a riverside setting on the Săsar River, Baia Mare is the capital of Maramureș County and a gateway to mountain routes in the Gutin and Igniș ranges. Documented since 1329, it developed as a gold-mining centre in the 14th and 15th centuries, and the Hungarian painter Simon Hollósy later used the city as a base for teaching Western European techniques to regional artists. UNESCO World Heritage sites lie within the wider region.
