Baraqish

Yemen

Ancient ruined city in north-western Yemen, Baraqish was once the religious capital of the Minean Kingdom and reached its peak in the 4th century BCE, when the Minaeans made it their political capital as well. Known to the Greeks and Romans as Athlula, it was mentioned by Strabo among the cities visited by the Roman commander Aelius Gallus during his military campaign in Yemen around 24–25 BCE. The site retains ruins of a dome, mosque, well, and tower, along with pottery shards and glass fragments from its Bronze Age origins onward. Inhabited until the 1960s, it is now abandoned and under military occupation.
