Sitting in the gorge of the Escalote river below a hilltop castle, Berlanga de Duero is a small Castilian village in Soria with a layered medieval history. Conquered by Fernando I of Castile in 1059, it later became a lordship of the Tovar family, and in the 16th century its Marquises oversaw a sweeping urban rebuild that produced a collegiate church, a Renaissance palace with gardens, and a hospital — much of it still standing among the village's timbered streets.
