Founded in 1488 by the Rajput chief Rao Bika of the Rathore dynasty, Bikaner is a large city in the Thar Desert of western Rajasthan, formerly the capital of the princely Bikaner State. Its walkable centre holds a concentration of cafés and restaurants, and the city's development was shaped by two major canal projects — the Ganga Canal, completed in 1928, and the Indira Gandhi Canal, completed in 1987.
