Cajabamba
Peru
Birthplace of José Sabogal, one of Peru's most celebrated painters, this pocket-sized northern town in the Cajamarca region has honoured him with an annual quick-painting contest held in his name. Founded in 1533 by Augustinian friars sent by King Charles V, Cajabamba was declared a Peruvian historical monument in 1987. Each October, the Virgen de Rosario Festival — observed continuously since 1668 — fills the town for ten days with fireworks, traditional dances, and local arts.
