Aizanoi, an ancient Roman city whose ruins are scattered in and around this pocket-sized highland town in Kütahya Province, is among the most substantial archaeological sites in Turkey. The site includes what is claimed to be one of the world's earliest stock exchange buildings — uncovered after a 1970 earthquake destroyed a mosque built over it — as well as a combined stadium-theatre complex, necropolises, and four bridges, including the Roman Penkalas Bridge still in use across the local Kocaçay stream.
