Cemberlitas
Türkiye
Çemberlitaş, a quarter in Istanbul's Fatih district, is anchored by the Column of Constantine — an ancient Roman column known in Turkish as Çemberlitaş, meaning "hooped stone," after the iron reinforcement bands fitted during Ottoman restorations in 1515 and again under Mustafa II. The surrounding square is dense with historic architecture: the Çemberlitaş Hamamı, likely designed by the 16th-century architect Mimar Sinan, still operates as a Turkish bath, while the Nuruosmaniye Mosque, the Grand Bazaar, and a string of smaller mosques and Ottoman complexes line the T1 tram route through the neighbourhood.
