Chachoengsao
Thailand
This riverside town on the Bang Pakong River in central Thailand, Chachoengsao sits a short distance east of Bangkok and is accessible by train. Founded in 1549 as a military recruitment centre during the Ayutthaya period, it carries the local nickname "Paet Riu" — meaning "eight cuts" — after a traditional way of preparing large fish once caught in the river.
