Chandrapur

Founded in the 13th century by the Gond king Khandkya Ballal Shah, Chandrapur is a fort city in eastern Maharashtra sitting at the confluence of the Erai and Zarpat rivers. Known as the "Black Gold City" for the coal seams surrounding it, the city also has a history of cotton weaving and is recognised for its silk saris. The Gond-era fort, around 550 years old, and temples including the Mahakali Devi and Anchaleshwar draw visitors alongside the forested tiger country nearby.
