Birthplace of the fabulist Jean de La Fontaine and site of both the First and Second Battles of the Marne, Château-Thierry is a town in the Aisne department of northern France, sitting on the Marne river and surrounded by Champagne vineyards. Its compact centre has a concentration of cafés and restaurants, and the town is one of 64 French communes to have received the Legion of Honour.
