A large city in South Korea's North Chungcheong Province with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants, set against mountain terrain and close to water. Cheongju serves as the provincial capital and is a practical base for the wider region, with its own domestic airport handling routes that also serve nearby Daejeon. The city took its current form in 2014 when the former Cheongju city and Cheongwon county merged into a single urban-rural municipality.
