Chiprovtsi
Bulgaria
Hand-woven carpet-making and a rare Roman Catholic heritage set this small Bulgarian village apart in the western Balkan Mountains. Chiprovtsi, in Montana Province near the Serbian border, grew as a mining and metalsmithing centre during Ottoman rule, reaching a dramatic peak with the anti-Ottoman uprising of 1688. After the town was repopulated in the 1720s, carpet weaving became its defining tradition and remains so today. The village sits along the river Ogosta.
