Cirkvena

This Croatian village in Koprivničko-križevačka County has a longer history than its modest size suggests: a parish recorded from 1306, a wooden chapel built by the Kerečeni nobility in 1382, and a fortress raised in the 16th century to defend against Ottoman incursions. King Leopold granted Cirkvena the rights of a Croatian town by charter in 1763. A railway station on the Križevci–Bjelovar line still serves the village, and the 1990 Croatian television series "Dirigenti i muzikaši" was filmed here.
