Founded on 3 April 1588, Corrientes is the oldest city in northeastern Argentina, sitting on a bend of the Paraná River across from its twin city Resistencia. The walkable centre mixes colonial and modern architecture, with several historic churches, a good spread of cafés and restaurants, and streets lined with lapacho, jacaranda, and orange trees. The city hosts one of Argentina's largest carnival celebrations and the National Chamamé Festival, held each January since the 1980s.
