Debdou, a pocket-sized town in eastern Morocco's Taourirt Province near the Algerian border, has a long history of multi-ethnic coexistence among Berbers, Arabs, and Moroccan Jews. From 1430 to 1563, the Ait Urtajjen — a Berber family connected to the Wattasid dynasty — maintained a semi-independent state here, giving the town an unusual political history for its size. Mountains are close by, and water is within a short drive.
