The University of Indonesia, one of the country's most prestigious universities, anchors this large city in West Java directly south of Jakarta. Part of the Greater Jakarta metropolitan area, Depok became an independent city in 1999 after separating from Bogor Regency, and has since grown into one of the most populous suburban cities in Indonesia, known as a centre of education and commerce.
