Eger
Heves · Hungary
Eger is a Hungarian wine town whose Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood) red is known well beyond the country's borders, set among vineyards in the hills between the Mátra and Bükk mountains. The walkable centre holds a medieval castle that repelled an Ottoman siege in 1552, a large baroque basilica, thermal baths, and what is said to be the northernmost Ottoman minaret in Europe — a legacy of nearly a century of Turkish rule after 1596.
