Red Sea town with around 5,000 years of continuous settlement, El Qoseir was known in ancient Egypt as Tjau and in the Ptolemaic era as Myos Hormos, serving as the terminus of the Wadi Hammamat trail — a major overland route linking the Nile Valley to the coast. Today it sits within walking distance of the Red Sea and close to the mountains of Egypt's Eastern Desert, offering a quieter alternative to the larger resorts to the north.
