Ferencvaros
Hungary
Ferencváros, Budapest's 9th district, sits on the Pest side of the Danube with a walkable centre dense with food and drink options and a cluster of major cultural institutions — among them the Ludwig Museum of contemporary art, the National Theatre, and the Palace of Arts. Named in 1792 to mark the accession of Emperor Francis I, the district developed through the 19th century as an industrial and working-class quarter, a history still legible in its architecture.
