Founded on Christmas Day 1902 by a Franciscan friar at a rubber traders' depot on the banks of the Quebrada La Perdiz, Florencia is the largest city in Colombia's Amazon region and the capital of Caquetá department. Sitting on the Orteguaza River at the foot of the Eastern Andes, it serves as the main gateway between the Andean and Amazonian regions, with ecotourism among its notable economic activities alongside cattle ranching and agriculture.
