Coastal town on the southern shore of Santa Catarina state, Garopaba grew from a small fishing village into a beach destination while retaining its low-rise, village-scale character through urban planning that kept buildings to one and two storeys. Its name comes from an indigenous word meaning "place of boats" or "cove of boats." The climate is moderate, with hot summers and mild winters, and cafés and restaurants are concentrated in a compact centre close to the water.
