A modest village in Misiones Province, north-eastern Argentina, General Alvear draws visitors to two waterfall attractions: the Salto Tobogán and the balneario Salto Dos Hermanos. The surrounding area is one of Argentina's main tea-growing regions, with yerba mate cultivation and processing central to the local economy. The village is connected by a fully paved road to the nearby city of Oberá and to Colonia Alberdi to the north. Settlement here dates to the early 20th century, when the area was known as El Naranjal.
