Pacific-coast beach town in Ecuador's Guayas province, General Villamil — widely known as Playas — has been the province's principal seaside resort since 2007, when the creation of Santa Elena province left it as Guayas's only coastal balneario. The town takes its official name from independence figure General José de Villamil Jolly. Fishing and commerce run alongside tourism as the main local activities, and Guayaquil lies close enough to make the town a practical short-trip destination.
