Hanmer Springs
New Zealand
Hot-springs village in the Canterbury region of New Zealand's South Island, Hanmer Springs sits at the base of Conical Hill with mountain terrain on all sides and an unusually dense café and restaurant scene for a settlement its size. The Māori name, Te Whakatakanga o te ngārahu o te ahi a Tamatea — meaning "where the ashes of Tamatea's fire lay" — references Tamatea, captain of the canoe Tākitimu. The village lies a short drive north of State Highway 7, the route between Christchurch and the West Coast via Lewis Pass.
