A UNESCO World Heritage site inscribed in 2011, Hiraizumi in Iwate Prefecture preserves five groupings of temples, gardens, and archaeological remains from the late eleventh and twelfth centuries, when the Fujiwara clan of Ōshū built an ambitious expression of Buddhist Pure Land ideals in Japan's Tōhoku region. It was the first World Cultural Heritage site designated in Tōhoku, and sits geographically at the midpoint of the old Ōshū domain between its southern and northern limits.
