Huaquillas
Ecuador
A busy border town on Ecuador's southern Pacific coast, Huaquillas sits on the Zarumilla River at the crossing point between Ecuador and Peru, forming the Ecuadorian half of a binational urban area. Its centre has a walkable café and restaurant scene, and the town is one of the main commercial and economic hubs of El Oro province. Known locally as "Centinela sin relevo" — the unrelieved sentinel — it grew rapidly after the 1941 Ecuadorian-Peruvian war.
