Founded in 1534 on the southern Bahia coast, Ilhéus is the hometown of Jorge Amado — author of Gabriela, Cravo e Canela and Terras do Sem Fim — and the setting of his most celebrated novels. Once the world's largest cacao producer, the city still carries the identity of Brazil's "Cacao Capital," with a historic centre, Atlantic beaches including Milionários and Olivença, and river landscapes shaped by the Almada and Cachoeira. The Jorge Amado Airport serves as a gateway to the wider southern Bahia coast.
