Itu, a city in São Paulo state, is known across Brazil for its oversized novelty objects — a tradition traced to the comedian Francisco Flaviano de Almeida — and for its role in the country's republican history: the first Republican Convention in Brazil was held here in 1873. Founded in 1610 by the bandeirante Domingos Fernandes, the city sits on the Tietê and Jundiaí rivers, and its Tupi name means "big waterfall."
