This small town on the water in Haute-Marne, north-eastern France, Joinville carries a layered medieval history: it was the seat of a lordship in the county of Champagne, and its château-fort gave the House of Guise their title of Prince de Joinville before being demolished in 1789. The 16th-century Château du Grand Jardin, built by Claude de Lorraine, duc de Guise, has since been restored. The town holds both a "Village étape" and a "Petite cité de caractère" designation.
