Mid-elevation departmental capital in eastern Guatemala, Jutiapa sits in mountain terrain and has been a city since 1878. Its name derives from a Nahuatl phrase meaning "river of flowers," and local crafts include palm-woven hats, tallow and paraffin candles, leather riding gear, and traditional ceramics. The Catedral San Cristóbal serves as the episcopal see of the Diocese of San Francisco de Asís de Jutiapa, established in 2016. Major annual celebrations run in late July in honor of San Cristóbal and in November for the Feria Ganadera Nacional.
