This highland town in Honduras's Olancho Department sits in a broad river valley and serves as the commercial hub for the surrounding ranching and agricultural region. Its colonial heritage survives alongside more modern development, and the Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción anchors the centre as the seat of the Diocese of Juticalpa. The town's Nahuatl name — meaning roughly "in the house of the snails" — reflects the region's pre-colonial past. Mountains are close by, and the Río Juticalpa runs through the valley.
