Karaj
Iran
One of Iran's largest cities and the capital of Alborz Province, Karaj sits close to the Alborz mountains and is nicknamed "Little Iran" for its diverse population drawn from across the country. The city traces habitation back to the Bronze Age at Tepe Khurvin and developed significantly under the Safavid and Qajar dynasties, leaving behind historical structures including the Soleimanieh Palace and the Shah Abbasi caravanserai. The Dizin ski resort is accessible from the city, and the scenic Chalus Road passes through the wider region.
