Khaplu serves as the main base for trekking into the Hushe Valley, with access to high peaks including Masherbrum, K6, K7, and Chogolisa, in Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan's disputed Kashmir region. The city sits along the Shyok River, historically a trade route linking Baltistan to Ladakh, and was once the seat of the Yabgo dynasty's second-largest kingdom in Baltistan. The Chaqchan Mosque, founded around 700 years ago, is among the notable sites in the area.
