Once the capital of a powerful sultanate that fought over control of the spice trade in the Moluccas, Ternate is a waterfront city in Indonesia's North Maluku province sitting at the foot of the Gamalama volcano. Its compact central core has cafés, restaurants, and an unusual number of churches for a city its size, while the surrounding waters and the volcano's slopes define the landscape on every side.
