Krujë is an Albanian mountain town defined by its medieval castle and its role as the stronghold of Skanderbeg, who defended it against three Ottoman sieges before his death in 1468. The Skanderbeg Museum sits within the castle grounds, and a national ethnographic museum and an old bazaar add further depth to the walkable centre. The town became the capital of the first Albanian medieval state in 1190 and sits a short drive north of Tirana, with scenic highland terrain and the Ishëm River nearby.
