Japan's cultural capital since Emperor Kanmu established the imperial court here in 794, Kyoto served as the seat of the emperors for eleven centuries and was largely spared wartime destruction, leaving an extraordinary concentration of Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, palaces, and gardens — several designated collectively as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Prominent landmarks include Kiyomizu-dera, Kinkaku-ji, Ginkaku-ji, and the Kyoto Imperial Palace. The city is also home to Kyoto University, the second-oldest in Japan, and to Nintendo.
