Founded in 1565 on Margarita Island in the Caribbean Sea, La Asunción is the capital of Venezuela's Nueva Esparta state, set in a fertile valley ringed by green hills. The 16th-century Catedral Nuestra Señora de La Asunción ranks among the earliest churches in the country, and the Santa Rosa Castle — built to protect the city — forms a dramatic backdrop above the Plaza Bolívar. The cooler valley climate contrasts with the coastal heat of nearby Porlamar.
