This coastal town in Chile's Coquimbo region, founded in 1830, with two beaches — La Principal and Las Conchas — drawing most of its tourism. Fishing remains a central activity, and the compact centre has a concentration of cafés and restaurants within walking distance of the water. The harbour, Puerto Punta Chungo, ships ore from the Los Pelambres mine and handles a share of Chile's external trade. The town sits roughly midway between Santiago and La Serena.
