Madrigal de las Altas Torres
Ávila · Spain
Birthplace of Isabella I of Castile — born here on 22 April 1451 — this little Ávila village also claims Vasco de Quiroga, the first Bishop of Michoacán in present-day Mexico, among its natives. Medieval walls still partially encircle the historic centre, which was declared a protected heritage zone in 2020, and the village holds several historic churches for its size. The name's second element, "of the high towers," reflects that medieval fortified character.
